London, UK - Austerity policies that have worsened poverty in the UK are fuelling a fundamental shift in the activity of Muslim philanthropic organisations for whom charity, increasingly, begins at home. The traditional focus on giving to international causes is now being matched by growing attention to helping the needy within Britain itself.

More than 20 leading doctors and scientists* from the UK and Italy denounce ongoing Israeli military aggression in Gaza in a letter to The Lancet, published today [Tuesday 22 July].  

“On the basis of our ethics and practice, we are denouncing what we witness in the aggression of Gaza by Israel,” write the authors. “We ask our colleagues, old and young professionals, to denounce this Israeli aggression.”

Jon Ashworth, Labour MP for Leicester South, will be fasting for the day on Thursday24 July as part of Ramadan. Jon has completed a day’s fast the last two yearsduring Ramadan, and will be repeating the experience this year.

OPEN LETTER TO THE PRIME MINISTER

Dear Prime Minister,

We, the undersigned unequivocally condemn yet another indiscriminate and illegal Israeli assault on the defenceless civilians in Gaza. We call for an end to the crimes and oppression against Palestinians and join the global voice of humanity in solidarity and support for the legitimate aspirations of peace, justice and freedom of both the Palestinian and Israeli people.

"A special food drive has been held in the city by the Federation of Muslim Organisations during the month of Ramadhan.
