We recently wrote to Jon Ashworth MP (Leicester South) with our concerns over the escalation of violence against the people of Gaza.

We received a reply from Jon which is attached below.

We will continue to press our local MP's to make representation to the Government to do all possible to seek an end to the violence and bring about a resumption of peace talks towards a lasting peace in that region.

We pray that you’re well and in the best of health and as we meet the midway point of the blessed month of Ramadhan it is full of ibadah and spirituality.

Today, 11 July, marks the 19th anniversary of the massacres in Srebrenica in 1995, when more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered in Srebrenica by Serbian paramilitary forces. 

During the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, the Bosnian enclave of Srebrenica was declared a UN Safe Area in 1993, under the supervision of the United Nations Protection Force.

The Federation of Muslim Organisations (FMO) is saddened and appalled by the tragic events in Gaza which have seen almost 80 Palestinians dead and counting as a result of the brutal and disproportionate Israeli assault on Gaza.

Over 500 people have also been injured and amongst the dead have been Palestinian women and children with eight members of the same family – including five children – killed in an air strike on two homes in Khan Younis, south of Gaza. 

The trial of eight people surrounding the tragic deaths of four innocent members of a local family has concluded with guilty verdicts but we now await sentencing. Shehnila Taufiq and her three children Zainab, Bilal and Jamal all died following an arson attack on their home in Spinney Hills, which took place on September 13 last year. They were respected members of the Muslim community who were active in local community life.

Suleman Nagdi: "As the spokesperson for the Federation of Muslim Organisations (FMO), I would like to congratulate the schools in Birmingham who recently achieved the Outstanding and Good grades following the recent Ofsted inspections. The inspections were performed in very testing and complex circumstances for schools which were borne out of an alleged plot to take over schools from what appeared to be an unsigned hoax letter.

Recent publicity about the group “Britain First” and the disgraceful events in the mosques in Bradford, have led me to drop you a line. I would want you to know that they certainly do not represent the Christian community in this country, and that we do not recognise their brand of “Christianity”. 

"Muslim and Hindu leaders say they do not think Eid and Diwali should be public holidays, despite an appeal to the Government to make them so.

A petition has been submitted to The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills calling for major Muslim and Hindu religious festivals to be celebrated with a nationwide day off work.

More than 110,000 people have signed the petition, submitted by Jon Timmis.

Mr Timmis said: "I believe that, given the number of Muslims and Hindus in this country, it is only fair we allow them to have the most important days in their faiths recognised in law...

Following the abduction of more than 200 girls from a school in Nigeria, the Federation of Muslim Organisations (FMO) condemned the actions as a violation of basic human rights.

Suleman Nagdi, Public Relations Officer for the FMO said, “According to reports, we understand that thankfully, the children are still alive. We urge the international community to do all it can to reunite the children with their loved ones. One can only imagine the distress, anxieties and pain which families are going through and our sympathies are with them...

Recent intrusions to masjids (mosques) by a far right group in some areas of the UK have been condemned by the Federation of Muslim Organisations (FMO) as irresponsible and highly provocative.

Suleman Nagdi, Public Relations Officer for the FMO said, “The actions of the Britain First group when they entered masjids and intimidated members of the congregation will do nothing to help build better relations between communities. All places of worship are sacred spaces and must be treated with respect and courtesy...
