Planned protest at Elbit Systems today – our statement and communication from Leicestershire Police as follows:

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

Brothers and Sisters,

We are aware that there is a planned protest at the Elbit Systems site starting this afternoon.

We implore you all to maintain calm and peace throughout the protest and PLEASE remain respectful towards the authorities in line with Islamic etiquette.

It is vital that our behaviour and akhlaq is impeccable to avoid distracting from the cause of the Palestinian people which is dear to all our hearts.

Insha’Allah please continue to raise awareness of the situation of the Palestinian people in a peaceful and constructive manner and keep them and those suffering across the world in your duas.

Jazakallah Khayra

Operation Sycamore, Meridian Protest

Dear Friend,

I would like to update you around the response to the protest on Meridian Park and to set out our policing style and tone for the operation.

We recognise there are members of our communities who have concerns related to the Palestinian people and may wish to show their support for activities being conducted at Meridian. As the police we have a duty to facilitate peaceful protest and we take this duty very seriously. However, we also have a duty to prevent crime and disorder and to ensure that lawful activity, such as that undertaken at the site, can take place unhindered.

For these reasons we will be taking proactive measures to ensure that we get the balance right in our approach. To do this we will be using section 14 of the Public Order Act which enables us to impose conditions on a protest. These conditions will be published, but briefly will direct where the protest will take place, how the protest area will be entered and will prevent any structures being erected within the protest area. It is a criminal offence to fail to comply with the directions given and that applies both to organisers and those attending the protest.

Our assessment is that imposing these conditions is necessary to prevent the intimidation of others, prevent serious disorder, disruption & damage, and importantly keep those protesting peacefully as safe as we can.

We want to be as transparent as possible and our offer remains open for community members to observe our policing response in order to build trust and confidence as we balance protecting the rights of all involved. I would also ask that anyone with any information that could assist us shares it, as we seek to prevent protestors becoming involved in activity which goes beyond what is peaceful.

I would be grateful if you could circulate this amongst your contacts so that we are able to get the widest possible audience for our approach.

Thank you once again and we will continue to update you with anything significant in the forthcoming days.

Superintendent Paul Allen”
