Update on FMO Open Letter on Leicester Riots 2022 Independent Inquiry

Following a meeting and consultation/ mashwara with affiliates of the FMO and a significant range of signatories to our letter addressed to the Prime Minister, expressing concerns regarding the appointment of Lord Ian Austin to lead the forthcoming inquiry, a consensus has been reached:

While we welcome a fair and impartial inquiry to better understand the issues and to eradicate hate and division for all communities in our city and beyond. We do not believe this can be achieved without the support or full confidence of our community. As it stands, we cannot, indeed, we will not support or contribute to an ‘inquiry without integrity’ from the outset.

Our commitment enshrined by our faith remains to seeking and working together towards truth and justice, even in the face of any initial setback.

With this in mind, we remain open to engaging in constructive dialogue in advance of the inquiry and implore that an alternative appointment is considered to ensure a fair and unbiased investigation for all.

“Weary the path that does not challenge. Doubt is an incentive to truth, and patient inquiry leadeth the way.”
