A community leader has been given a lifetime achievement award for his work.

Suleman Nagdi received the award from South Asian Community Leaders of Leicestershire at a book launch last week.

The book, by group chairman Mohammed Parvez Sheikh, of Eyres Monsell, is the second in a series detailing the achievements of leading members of the South Asian community in Leicester.

Mr Nagdi is chairman of the Muslim Burial Council of Leicestershire and spokesman for the Federation of Muslim Organisations.

He said: "I was very proud and humbled when I was told I would be receiving the award.

"I have won awards nationally for my achievements in the community, but to be recognised by people in Leicester is very special.

"I have been living in the city for 36 years.

"It has a very special place in my heart and I'm very glad that people believe I have been some sort of influence in the community."

Mr Nadgi accepted his award from Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Jennifer Lady Gretton, at Loros hospice, in Groby Road, Leicester. Both the Muslim Burial Council of Leicestershire and Federation of Muslim Organisations have close links with the charity.

In April, the Federation of Muslim Organisations held its annual youth and community awards and donated money from ticket sales to Loros.

Mr Nagdi said: "I've dealt with Loros on a great number of occasions.

"I can only pay tribute to the vital support it provides families at such critical and desperate times.

"We should be thankful that we have an organisation such as Loros and its truly dedicated staff, who work tirelessly providing physical, emotional and social end-of-life care.

" I urge everyone to support Loros whichever way they can."
